children of men analysis

The scene starts off with no sound and a black screen. There is a voice over which bridges over from the next scene. The opening scene starts off with a high angle shot of a café. It is shows a group of people all looking at a TV screen which is broadcasting a news report. This is hinted at with the TV that can be seen in the back of the shot. The colours in the first scene are really dull with most characters wearing greys and greens. This shows a sense of depression in the society. By viewing the café scene as a viewer you can tell that the location is London by a specific costume that is an icon for London. This icon is the police man wearing his uniform. After a few seconds a man walks through the crowd and stands in the middle of the shot. This is a hint the director gives the viewers which shows who the main actor in the film is. The camera then follows this character out of the café, which hints again that this is one of the main characters. When the camera comes out of the café it does a pan shot from right to left, by doing this it shows the viewers again where the scene is set. During the pan shot you can see a busy London street with a London bus this is another icon that can be instantly recognisable by almost anyone. After the pan shot is done the camera then follows the main actor down the street. As the character walks down you can see different cultures all combined into one which gives a hint that the film is not in the present time. The main character stops to put some alcohol into his coffee, this also shows that he has been having a rough time and may not be in the best of states. The camera then moves behind him showing a view of the café. This is important as what happens next involves the café. A bomb explosion goes off from inside the café and everyone begins to scream. A ringing bell is then sounded which continues to ring in the background this gives a feel of shell shock to the viewers. After the explosion has gone off the camera man slowly walks towards it moving up and down, this gives a sense of dis orientation after the bomb has been exploded. A women walks out of the wreckage carrying her left arm in her right hand this shows the viewers how bad the bomb was and some of the effects its had on people
